Why you should go Greek: Fraternal bonds

April 18th, 2010

This week we have been talking about a few of the reasons why you should join a Frat or Sorority. Among them: creating a built in support system, an opportunity to take part in large community service events, and lots of leadership opportunities. Today, we will touch upon the most common motivator for people to join their respective organizations. FRATERNAL BONDS.

Fraternities and Sororities are fraternal organizations. So it is absolutely no surprise that those bonds run deep. Brothers and Sisters are just that, your brother or sister. They become family. You may even argue and disagree on things, but at the end of the day, you love each other, and you come back together and move forward to bigger and better things. It is the type of friendships that are with your entire life. As you grow older, you share the pivotal moments in each others life. Being in each others wedding parties, celebrating birthdays, children and many other successes along the way.

From the collegiate standpoint, moving away from your family and friends can be incredibly tough. Joining a Frat and Sorority is a great way to make many new close friends. Not only among your new brothers or sisters, but with members of other organizations you meet through out your collegiate experience. It is a huge reason as to why Greeks have been a staple of college life for hundreds of years, and will continue to be for many years to come because it is a great retention tool. It’s a bonafide reason why many decide to tough it out and stay on campus.

Why you should go Greek: Leadership opportunities

April 18th, 2010

In continuing to share a few of the great reasons to Go Greek, besides the great support system, and organized community service, today’s post will talk about how joining a greek letter organization will open many doors to leadership opportunities. There are several ways in which this could happen. One of the principal ways is that becoming close to such a large group of men or women is bound to bring about conversations about different groups and organizations on campus. Which often times leads to attending meetings and many times, later down the line, taking a leadership role in those organizations.

We spoke a few blog posts ago about being a support system, and that is directly tied in to these leadership opportunities. Because once you take upon those roles, the support and of your brothers or sisters is invaluable. Becoming part of these organizations is a perfect experience to help mold you into a leaders, or improve your leadership skills. You learn to deal with large groups and work well in conjunctions with others, you learn time management, and so much more. All this merges with opportunities and being in the right place at the right time. Yet another lesson you can learn from Greek life that will help you later on in life.
