There are many reasons to go Greek, but here a few of the bigger highlights with advice from some of the top universities in the nation. The Top Five Reasons to go Greek:

1. Leadership

There are many opportunities for students of Greek organizations to become leaders. Leadership opportunities are also available in various other campus organizations and activities. Each year, members of Greek organizations are found among the campus leaders and officers in every phase of the University, including Student Government, academic honor societies, and various other organizations. Greek Life enables it members to learn how to live and work within a group environment. It can also help the members gain planning skills and teach you how to manage your time. The leadership knowledge and skills you gain through your experience will prove invaluable and rewarding during your college career and beyond.

2. Scholarship

The mission of the University is to provide a solid learning environment for its students, and Greek organizations provide a network of support to succeed academically. Serious scholarship and academic excellence are encouraged among all students. A variety of incentives and programs are designed to help all members reach their fullest potential. Dedicate yourself first to academics, as its academic rewards will ensure a more enjoyable college experience, as well as a successful future. Greek life is a commitment to scholarship excellence.

3. Community Service

Greek organizations pride themselves on community service participation; it has been a corner stone of the Greek experience since its founding days. Philanthropy projects are events in which the Greek community as a whole or as individual chapters donates their time and efforts to raise money for a variety of worthwhile causes. Throughout the year, Greek organizations strive to strengthen the relationship with the community by increasing individual member involvement in local causes and events. Participation in such events provide meaningful learning experiences for all.

4. Brotherhood / Sisterhood
Brotherhood / Sisterhood is more than wearing Greek letters, attending meetings, and participating in activities. It is the joining of individuals in love and friendship, striving for similar goals that draw them together as one strong unit. It is the opportunity for you to meet new people and appreciate their individuality while sharing a common bond. You will learn many things about yourself and what it means to have shared lifetime commitments to the same values. Your brothers/sisters will be a part of your life for many years to come and will help you to create some wonderful memories throughout your college career and beyond. Each organization has something unique to offer, just as you have something unique to offer them.

5. Social
Social opportunities are another way for all organizations to come together and interact with others. Some of these activities include Retreats, Greek Week, athletic competitions, alumnae gatherings, mixers with other Greek organizations, step shows, and formals. By interacting with the Greek community, members gain friendships with people from other organizations. This creates a closer bond among the community and helps the organizations support one another’s events. Through these activities, Greek organizations fulfill their goal of bringing together a group of people to build their values, while enjoying the bonds of friendship.

Recruitment is crucial to every organization. Your new lines and pledge classes bring new life, and inspiration that are paramount in the growth and development of Greek Letter organizations. So it is important that you spare no expense in your recruitment. We are by no means suggesting that you be fiscally irresponsible. But that you put recruitment spending as a high priority item of your budget.

The suggestion we have today, is a bit costly. However, if your budget permits, one that has a great return on investment. It may seem “old school,” but mail outs have been around for ages, because they work. We have said before that it is important to take advantage of campus resources. Getting the information you need for your mail out is a great way to take advantage of your campuses greek office tools. Most can offer the mailing addresses or emails of incoming freshmen, and sort it by the appropriate gender.

You have to do some of the work yourself also. Like we suggested when we said to get out there and table. Use the emails you got from tabling on campus to target those already on campus who have already expressed interest in your chapter.

You can’t really have intake of new members without recruitment. You also can’t really have recruitment without a little marketing. It does not matter if you are selling gum, the most expensive car, or your frat or sorority, the best marketing tool is word of mouth. Hands down. Hearing good things about a chapter or organization from family, friends, and those you’re close to goes a long way in swaying the decision of which chapter you choose to join.

So it is important to you try to control the message. Make sure you encourage your members to put their best foot forward. At any given time, a potential new member could be watching, and your brother or sister is no longer “Susy” or Joe, but an unaware representative of your organization. This is particularly true when recruitment season rolls around. The spotlight is on all the member of the greek community and you must make sure your organization shines.

It also critical that you are aware or what is being said about organization. Keep a pulse on the social media network, local papers, and other avenues and how they report on your organization, members and events.

What are you waiting for? Start talking about your frat or sorority!

One of the most often untapped sources for wisdom as far as recruitment is concerned are alum and alumnae.

We have talked about how big a decision joining a frat or sorority is. Partly because it’s a lifelong commitment. You’re a brother or sister for the rest of life. There are a myriad of ways that as alumni you can give back to your organization. One of the most often untapped sources for wisdom as far as recruitment is concerned are alum and alumnae. They were once were undegrads were. Their experience is invaluable as they can tell you ideas you should stray from, as they did not work work them. They can also share the things that did work during their time as undergrads. Every campus is different, and as much as national has set rules and presents, none of compare to the advice of an alumni for our local campus.

Alumni are also a great source for the next generation of pledges too. They can share their experience and affection with organization with family and friends. Bringing on board great potential new members, and even sometimes legacies (When a family member of an exciting brother or sister joins the same greek lettered organization.)

Alumni love to stay connected and involved. So be sure to seek the advice of your older brothers or sisters. Your organization will be the better for it, as will your recruitment.

We told you to get out there and get involved on campus and the community, we mentioned taking advantage of campus opportunities to table and attend events. Today, we’ll talk about getting out there in cyberspace! This day and age, having a presence is no longer a luxury. It is a necessity! With the proliferation of high speed internet, when we want to learn more about just about anything, the first thing we do is fire up our laptops. An interesting shift the past few years has been the wide spread of social media, and the expectation that instant communication with companies and organizations is expected.

Let’s talk about what this means to you, and your organization. People are talking, sometimes about your frat or sorority. You need to be a part of that conversation. Managing the message and how your organization is represented online is invaluable. Let’s talk about some of the places where you need to have a profile or presence.

Home Page
Have a clean, well designed and user friendly website. Talk about your history, your pillars, and other important organizational facts. Include pictures, testimonials, FAQ’s, and make sure you have contact information to your nationals, as well as easy links to your local undergraduate chapters. Also, encouraging your chapters to maintain sites themselves.

Facebook
Facebook is one of the most visited sites on the internet. Think of it as a companion to your homepage. It’s your organizations virtual yearbook. Allowing you share pictures, blogs, video, and connect with brothers and sisters through out. It’s a great and easy way for those interested to learn about your organization and ask questions if they need to. It’s a great way for you to interact and control the message there too.

Twitter
The social media phenomenon that is twitter has spread like wild fire. You can catch it on almost all news casts and a myriad of television shows. More importantly, it’s found on the laptops and smart phones of most college age students. It’s 140 burst of immediate information. You can disseminate information that is important to your organization, and respond to, when need be, when your organization is being spoken about.

You’re already online visiting our blog, so make sure you have a great web presence yourself!

So far this week while talking recruitment tips, we mentioned that you should encourage your members to get involved on campus and the community. Today, we’ll talk about having a presence on campus and tabling and attending events. Just like it is important to be involved in organizations, it is also crucial to attend varying events on campus. From their inception, greek organizations have been a phenomenal tool in retention of students. So most campuses invest lots of resources to help greek have successful, fruitful, organized, and safe recruitment sessions. Not only do they have campus entities to supervise and offer assistance through out the year, but most campus put together welcoming ceremonies and other events where students can come out and learn more the different organizations on campus, including all the undergraduate sorority and fraternity chapters on campus. Be sure to have a good presence there. Be prepared to answer lots of questions and to put your best foot forward.

Another great tool that universities allow is tabling. Most campuses have hot spots. Highly congregated areas like the student unions or the center of campus where you are allowed to set up tables and display para and hand out information for you upcoming events, advertise your organization, and again, get free exposure on campus.

So get out there, be social, table, and make sure to attend events!! Stay tuned for more recruitment tips!

This week on the blog, we will be tackling a hot topic for greeks during the summer months: Recruitment! Like any other form of marketing, recruitment greatly benefits from word of mouth. Being involved on campus and in the surrounding community will spread work about your fraternity or sorority and help leaps and bounds in boosting your reputation. You should be doing community service and and helping out around town. Planning benefits and making a difference, leaving campus and your new town or city better than you found it. There is no shortage of causes to get involved with. So there is really no excuse to not get involved.

Encouraging your membership to get involved on campus is imperative for every greek letter organization. First, it helps give your membership a balance and the opportunity to pursue other passions and interests. Secondly, it also permits them to not only have another outlet to foster their creativity and leadership skills, but their involvement gives them the opportunity to meet a lot of new people. Who with the frame of reference of previous interactions in other organizations could explore the possibility of joining your frat or sorority.
